RISO AMARO

18cm x 24cm - 2011

Silvana Mangano's picture, rice, soy, sand

The film by Giuseppe De Santis of 1949 is still topical: an unscrupulous girl ready to work her way at all costs. The Italian title is based on a pun since riso means both laughter and rice. Witticism rules: the rice weeder’s smile is decomposed as the seed of her enslavement.
