Taoism explains the concept of yin yang to describe how polar or seemingly contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world, and how they give rise to each other in turn. Just as each individual encloses a masculine and a feminine nuance in our character, ‘He’ 他, in blue, is absorbed by the pink background and the pink ‘She’ 她 lays on the blue surface. Complementary opposites only exist in relation to each other, being bound together as parts of a mutual whole.
